i have a whisper power dual filtration system and there is a knob right in the middle and when i turn it it either makes water overflow over the middle or make sthe water level go down is this normal and shoul di keep it so the filter makes a steady waterfall but not over flowing top?

The knob is to adjust the water flow, especially at times when people feed their fish, so the fish gets the food, not the filter. It's easier than unplugging the filter all the time. You just have to remember to readjust it after the fish have eaten.

The water shouldn't go over the uptake, even if the flow is at maximum. If yours is doing this, the filter media is becoming clogged and needs to ether be rinsed or replaced.

you need a steady waterfall, sometimes with these filters you need to check that there is not too much flow otherwise you can make the fish sick, when you need to change your filtration ie charchoal or dacon you can save money by not buying the cartridges which are expensive just put a little dacon in the bottom , get a pair of ladies stockings cut the foot part out fillit with activated charcoal or carbon an rinse well tie a knot in the stocking to keep the charcoal in this will last for about 8 wks and save you heaps
