These stats are from the US National Domestic Violence Hotline:
-On the average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day: Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, Intimate Partner Violence, 1993-2001, February 2003.
-The number of women killed by an intimate partner has stayed about the same for the last 10 years. There has actually been a decline in the number of men killed by an intimate partner: Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1976-2004: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/intimates.htm
-1 in 3 teens report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, slapped, choked or physically hurt by his/her partner: Teenage Research Unlimited. Findings from study commissioned by Liz Claiborne Inc. to investigate the level of and attitudes towards dating abuse among American teenagers aged 13 to 18 [online] 2005 Feb [cited 2006 Mar 20].
Women are still being murdered by their intimate partners at the same levels; I couldn't find recent statistics on the status of domestic abuse levels. So it is hard to tell if domestic abuse is being reported more, or if domestic abuse is increasing, decreasing or staying the same. It's definitely still a very serious problem.

um hard to say. there is a lot more attention paid to domestic disputes and the state now takes over cases that involve domestic violence.
it really is a cyclical thing. the daughter of an abused woman hooks up with an abuser. and then she, for whatever reason, will not let that scum bag go. and the cycle just repeats itself.
meaningful stats are so hard to get on this subject though. but i can tell you for certain the state is taking more responsibility for domestic violence type crimes. if it's a good thing or not i am not certain, but the state is taking decisions out of individuals hands and once a complaint is filed, prosecuting. on the surface, one would think that would help to break the cycle. i hope so!

Don't confuse reports of crime for crime itself.
In the past, even as recent as 10-20 years ago, women were more likely to not report domestic violence so it would not end up in police reports, the news etc.
Also, we hear a lot more stories about individuals with the 24 hour news networks reporting everything they can get their hands on just to stay on the air.

Oh, I'm certain it will have decreased. The term domestic violence is an umbrella term for spousal and child abuse. There is more awareness than there used to be. The police and the courts take incidents seriously. Social problems in general (example: drug addiction, alcoholism) are more likely to be recognised, and recognised sooner. There are more resources available than in the past.

I don't know if it's increasing or if it's just reported more today. Years ago women were told when they married that they had to stay in the marriage and do what their husbands told them so few complained or did anything to try and change things ~ not that many could have anyway if their husband was abusive.
Unfortunately, many men haven't changed through the years and are just as abusive, if not more so today, than they were before. People are out-of-control and want their way and many have horrible tempers and don't try to control them and take it out on anyone who is available ~ not only their wives/gfs but also their children.
