Try Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred Taylor. It's an amazing book and is in a somewhat similar vein to "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and is an amazing book. There's also a sequel, "Let the Circle be Unbroken", but I haven't read it.

SF
Will Smith starred in "I Robot" last year. It was written by Isaac Asimov, Ph.D.
Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles"
Anything by either Arthur C. Clark (2001) or Robert Heinlein (my hero).
Intrigue
John Grisham..you've probably seen the movies with Matt Damon, Tom Cruise and other mega-stars but the books are (as always) better.
Mystery
Tony Hillerman
The chronology of Lieutenant Leaphorn and Sgt. Jim Chee, two Navaho Tribal Policemen solving crimes within and without traditional Navaho customs.
Tom Clancy
From the cold war to th war on terror.
Miroslav Volf (Chair and Dean of phylosophy and religion at Yale University)
Was conscripted by the communists during the fall of the Czech Republic or Bosnia or some damn where. The communists had listening bugs. When they heard his disagreements with the government he was tortured.
His last book deals with "Forgiveness".
If this man can forgive then what the flip is our problem???
So deep you can only read a page at a time.

Have you read "To Kill a Mockinbird"? That is one of my favorites. Also anything by John Steinbeck. He wrote "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Cannery Row" just to name a couple. He wrote much more than that and I love all of his books. I have read everything he wrote as far as I know. How about Hemingway? I am not really into him but he was a great great writer and many people are. I don't know if they will help you in college. I am way way out of college, I just wanted to broaden my reading material and those are the books I most enjoyed.

Please don't take this personally, but if I read about one more person asking about good books to read I am going to, to..I don't know what.
I appreciate the fact that you are interested in reading good books. Do you know how often this question is asked everyday. Go to your literature teacher or a good librarian so you and they would be able to discuss with you more thoroughly.
