I've heard this song litarally hundreds of times... I never have, and never will get tired of hearing it!

First: It hits you with this AWSOME, hard rock song; which by itself makes this one of the greatest classic rock tunes ever.... Then: If that wasn't enough; it then hits you with one of the most beautiful, instrumental, rock ballads of ALL TIME! Don't forget the electronic bird chirping at the end! What else could you ask for?

Very subjective question

Someone mentioned Wish You Were Here, i always thought that was one of the best songs ive ever heard. The begining, the guitar is just so perfect, its literally like its singing or speaking to you. But dont forget Time, spectacular lyrics, beauty guitar.

Voodoo Chile (slight return) Hell, i love that song so much, i cant even tell which version i like better, Stevie Ray or Jimi. I listen to both often!

War Pigs, Black Sabbath, first album they put out, and its groundbreaking. Very well put together song, has anticipation, crescendo, terrific lyrics, excellent musicianship

Bohemian Rhapsody, so musical, so intersting and unique, and that ending, so powerful

As is Stairway To Heaven, but with the advantage of having felxibility for riffing during live performances.

Bunch of Who songs i could list, how bout Love Reign O'er Me, or Baba O'Reilly, Young Man Blues live at Leeds.

Dont ever forget Freebird. In the 70s every memorial day it was a guess to see which was the most requested rock song of the year, Freebird or Stairway to Heaven. Maybe the ultimate concert song.

Hell, i have a hard time even trying to decide on my favorite Beatles or Led Zep song, this is just tooo dam hard, and too subjecctive. Hell not only on a personal level, but on a day to day level. Dont we all change our minds? Gimme a coupla days, weeks, months or years, and it may change, may not.

PS: the remade acoustic version of Layla i thought was awesome. I love hearing a different, yet still intersting spin on a great song. He sort of started a trend with it, and for the most part ive enjoyed alot of what i heard. Artists have often revamped a song for concert play, if only adding long riffs or solos. If done right, its what live music is all about. Of course with the provision that its the original (or one of) artist who does the tinkering

Yes It is perfect and here are 5 more that are perfect!
5. Let It Be The Beatles
4. Stairway To Heaven Led Zeppelin
3. Satisfaction (I Cant Get No) Rolling Stones
2. Like A Rolling Stone Bob Dylan
1. Hotel California The EAgles

The accustic version Clapton did in the 90's sucked. The original is incredible the blending of the hard rock and the instrumental ending is hard to beat It's tough to think of a better "perfect song;" but I think there are a few contenders.

Other contenders:

"Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" by Hendrix.

"Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones.

"Baba O'Riley" (Teenage Wasteland) by the Who

"Aqualung" by Jethro Tull

and "Wish You Were Here" or
"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" both by Pink Flyod

Tough to call any of them the "perfect song" but they all come pretty damn close.

1. If Eric Clapton ripped off Rita Cooledge (like THAT would happen...shyeah!) then Rita Cooledge ripped off Elton John.
2. The "Electronic Chirping" is most likely Duane Almann using a slide way up high on the guitar to simulate a seagull.
3. It's not THE perfect song, since he tried to recreate it with "Bad Love".

Layla is almost opposite to what people thought was the "perfect song". A song like stairway to heaven starts slow and ends fast. Layla starts fast and ends with a piano playing, and Duane Allman doing his thing. I think Duane Allman's slide playing MAKES this song. Without him who knows if it may have become this popular.

Layla is a great song, but sadly the indivdual tastes for what makes a song good are so widely varied that there can never be one truly perfect song, loved by all.

I am happy for you that you have found your one perfect song. My one pefrect song that I will never be tired of is One by Metallica.

Pretty close. By the way, that bird chirping at the end is Duane Allman playing slide (It's a little trick he was famous for).

It's a great song. I think they should have made the first part of the song where Clapton and Allman are playing together longer. They are both guitar gods.
