My boyfriend has a Dell Inspiron 8600 with Windows XP. His laptop holds about 40GB on the hard drive. Unfortunately, he has about 1GB of space left due to his emormous collection of music and picture files. He does not want to lose any of his files or spend hours trying to burn them all onto disks. However, he does want to back them up and free up space on his comp.

Someone suggested buying an external hard drive. He is now looking for an external hardrive that is dependable, quiet, will not lose data and is not prone to catch fire due to overheating(yes i said catch fire!). His price range is around $100, with atleast 250GB or more. It needs to be able to plug into a USB port with a god transfer speed. Does anyone know where he can get a good deal on a reliable external hardrive? Hopefully someone has an answer b/c I surely do not. :-]

With all due respect ... this ain't rocket science.
Catch fire ? ..... Please ... don't be ridiculous .... I've been an IT professional for almost 25 years & I've yet to hear of (let ever imagine) a hard drive combusting.

Here is a link that may offer some ideas :

Personally, I would go for Western Digital .... PERIOD !!!!!!
I would also say Seagate but they do not market ver many external drives.
These two brands are the HANDS DOWN, NO CONTEST, without a doubt most reliable hard drives available.

go to best buy... find one that fits in your budget and buy it... for all intents and purposes they're all the same... no need to look for a specific brand or model
