Some people's jobs depend on whether their cash register drawers come out even in the end. If someone gave you too much change, then it's possible that five dollars that you keep could cost the poor person who didn't realize they miscounted their JOB.

If the person was being a jerk, and they screwed up because of it, then it sounds like their fault. But if it was an honest mistake, you should give it back, because honest mistakes shouldn't cost people their jobs - and not giving it back could cause exactly that.

I return it. It's the honest thing to do. Just think of it as being your relative, or some other loved one, who's on a register that comes up short at the end of the shift. Depending on the amount that she's short, she could possibly lose her job.

Plus, I strongly believe in the Murphy's Law--what comes around goes around. Even though I don't work on a register, I often see my honesty returned in other forms.

I have been in retail in for many years and about 2 times at two different jobs I accidently gave one person like an extra dollar and another one like an extra $5 dollars they both returned it to me, I guess if your an honest trusting person you would return it and if your greedy you wouldn't. I had a customer give me a $100 dollar bill she found on the ground and I gave it to a supervisor. I rather be honest.

I recently changed Singapore dollars for Baht in a Thai bank. I guess because I showed a British passport, the Teller thought pounds sterling so gave me much more than he should have..
I immediately showed him his error and with much smiling all round he corrected his mistake, Had I just walked off, I am sure he would have suffered huge embaressment and I would have been caught out eventually

It's happened and I returned it. I got $10 too much when I cashed a check at the bank one day. I took it back cause I knew it wasn't mine.

I always return it.
I once got into an argument with a cashier who got highly offended and insisted she gave me the right change and I just walked out.

I'm a really nice and honest person so I would probably return it no matter how much money it was. It's only the right thing to do.

If I catch the mistake while I'm still in the store, I'll return it. There have been times that I didn't realize until I got home, then I'll keep it.
