I'm lactose intolerant. People with lactose intolerance lack the enzyme in their digestive track that breaks down lactose in milk into a form that our body can use. Either you have absolutely no enzyme or, like most people with lactose intolerance, are just deficient and can easily overload your system with dairy.
So you can eat butter, just in small amounts.
Also, in active-culture yogurts, one of the bacterias acts very similarly to the enzyme in the human body that lactose intolerant people lack. So what I do is if I eat something with a lot of dairy in it, I also eat some yogurt. This usually helps my body digest the lactose better and I don't get sick. But I still have to be careful and pay attention to how much dairy I eat each day, because man does it suck when I overload my system...
I don't drink milk at all. I suppose I could in very small amounts, but I associated (early on in life) that really sick feeling with milk so just smelling milk is enough for me to feel nauseous. It's a mental thing. I do cook with milk (in small amounts), however.

I'm latose inolerant too, but sometimes nothing sounds better than a tall glass of chocolate milk (btw, 2% 1% or skim seems to not give me as many problems). I'll also suffer for the occasional piece of pizza or bowl of ice cream. For some reason, butter doesn't seem to harm me as much, but then again, I seldom use butter.

I only drink lactose free milk but have no problem with all the rest. As for butter, I just don't use or use margarine.

butter is fine since it has small amounts of milk, also chocolate milk , the process it goes through makes it tolerable to people who have intolerance to milk, sweet rice milk is good too i like it better than soy if you want something different than acidophulis plus bifidis also, lactose intolerance has nothing to do with growth hormones, growth hormones cause little girls to get breasts and periods earlier it is also known to cause breast engorgement in little boys
