If I get an external hard drive for my computer will it help it run smoother?

Or should I get more ram for it?

Think of your computer like a desk. The hard drive is storage, or drawers. The ram is the desk top. Having more storage wouldn't really help you work faster. But being able to have more stuff on your desk top would help you to have more stuff at your finger tips. There is a point when you can have too much stuff in your storage compartments. An external drive is also good to back up your computer. You can buy them now for about a buck a gig or less.
