Without evidence, its just fanciful thinking first promulgated by our primitive barbaric ancestors to explain the unkown universe. The first belief in an afterlife and, presumably higher beings, first appeared among homo sapiens around 60,000 years ago, which coincided with the first appearance of ceremonial burials.
Obsolete genes do not die overnight, so we'll be seeing a distorted worldview for some time to come.

Answer a question with a question? Is there a Boogy Man? Ask a child. Their answer will undoubtedly be yes. As the child grows into an adult they change their way of thinking. The same goes with humankind.
As we were in our infancy (thousands of years ago) our knowledge base was extremely limited. We "invented" god in order to explain away the things which we didn't understand and which we feared. As we mature (human civilization) we are beginning to understand more and more.
The ones who hold desperately onto the belief in a diety use the argument of "how do you explain the universe if there is no god". The answer to that question is the same now as it has always been, at this moment I can't, but given enough time the truth will be known.
Charles Duell, Commissioner of the US Patent Office in 1899 is usually quoted (possibly misquoted) as having said "We should close the US Patent Office because everything that can be invented has already been invented". This quote is the exact same type of thinking that leads people to continue to justify their belief in god. The assumption that we know everything there is to know and yet we still can't explain the universe. I would argue that as technology has truly proven that quote to be misguided, so to is the creationists argument against science. Science will, someday, prove the origins of the universe. Until then, if you have to, go ahead and believe in god. If it make you feel better, it can't hurt.

it is a nice question, just the other day I was thinking the same. I reaslised people fight for my God your God or is there God or no God.
thinking over that I realized that I wouldn't care to ask or believe or debate others over this because it is something personal could be based on family, birth, upbringing n so on. Thus, trust me if you want the answer to this question " is there a God", then I assure you that you can answer it best and satisfactory level for yourself. Your life, experience and thoughts can tell you if God exist or not. If its there for you, you will feel and if you feel you God it all by your ownself n all n that you are ur own strength then you may feel God is not there. Thus, listen to urself because you have the answer to it.We are all mere human beings.

Flip it over: operate from the presumption there is no god and then seek evidence of an omniscient, omnipotent being.

Our existence necesitates a higher being, and our laws necesitate a higher law that they must strive toward.
Who that being is up for debate, as is the make-up of the higher law.

sometimes I think of it like this... if there was a god he/she would not blame me for not believing in him/her because what proof did he/she give me.
what do I think-- they could be a god yes, but there also could not be a god.

Nietzsche said, ' God is dead.' I would go a step further and say, ' God is not dead because he was never alive.'

First you must ask, what defines what it is you want to know if it exists.
What is 'God'?
