Cow .Horses can't digest most weed seed , so adding horse manure is like adding concentrated weed seed . Doesn't seem to be as fertile either . Had a neighbor drop some off one time ,when I wasn't home . He cleaned out his barn & put it directly on the vegetable garden (February ) Yikes ! Didn't seem to help much , fertility-wise, and definitely made for a lot more weeding , for several years.

From an old cowgirl, the cow manure is richer as a rule because of many of the reasons stated, such as horses passing all the weed seeds without enough gastric juice to render them dead and in general the difference in feed. The horse manure is easier to gather because of stalling, corralling and in general more confinement than cows. We are lazy so if the horse makes it easier to gather his manure, we will settle up. I would much rather smell horse than cow manure, but then I think a horse filled barn is like perfume. Cows to your question, though.

Cow manure is typically used for gardens because horses do not fully digest the seeds in the hay they eat so if you spread horse manure in your garden you will end up with a field of hay. You can also use mule manure if you don't want something as hot as cow manure. Mule manure unlike horse manure generally has very few seeds because mules digest their food more thoroughly hence there are less seeds in the manure.

I have free access to four manures, five if you counted hogs pee-yew. Horse, cattle, sheep and chicken. I don't use cow or horse because of weeds. Sheep is easy to work with and nearly odor and weed free. I use chicken for manure tea and foliar feeding. A neighbor raises emu and llamas but I haven't tried it yet.

We've always used cow, It breaks down faster, a little more easyer to use, as well as to find, but if you can get it, chicken manure, is real good also, and use human hair, most barber shops will give it to you, it contain alot of nitrogin, as well as it keeps moles and gophers away. It's like an itching powder to them, it also smells real bad to them.

Cow manure is generally easier to get than horse manure. However, I know people who like horse manure better. They say it's more effective and it doesn't smell as bad.

So long as it is sterilized, it shouldn't matter. It needs to be sterilized to kill any weed seeds that survived passage through the GI tract.

i think either should work well. if you are REALLY interested in this type of thing...get some ph samples of your dirt and ask someone in the know if you should be using either one of those. some people with low acidity in their dirt prefer to use -- ugh -- chicken pooo -- yeah i know -- gross. chickens have a high acidity in their poo.... it's all rather interesting in a way -- circle of life you know.
