My younger daughter went through this. She decided to gauge her ears from 20g to 10g. She started wearing the large size almost immediately. I thought she should have done it more gradually but she said it was the best way to do it. So far, she has not had any problems with infections because she is very careful about keeping the holes clean and cleaning the earrings. My other daughter gauged her own ears a while back but did it much more gradually. She went to a larger size just about every week. As a result, I guess it's up to the individual and how much pain that person is willing to tolerate while doing it. The daughter who did the quick gauging said that it was pretty painful but could live with it.
