You should really eat your meal, before you go to the hospital.
But if the patient is in ICU, and you need to stay at the hospital, then I'd eat at the cafeteria that they have. Most hospital cafeteria food is good, and it is good for you, too.....but their prices are a little steep. Thats because the Drs and nurses make six digit salaries, and THEY can afford it.

I would eat out, and get an extra meal to pack for the person in the hospital so they can have better food than the cafe at the hospital which they have probably everyday.

Find out the cafe hours. I've been disappointed more than once by a closed cafe.

Packing a lunch is good especially if you can share with the person you're visiting--only if it's allowed in their hospital diet.

Packing a lunch, you get what you want, the way you want it.

Whatever works for you that day, do that.

I would buy from the hospital cafe and not eat in front of the friend as they might be on a special diet, the smell of food might make them literally ill. etc. or I would wait until after my visit and then eat out after I left the hospital.

It would depend on who I was visiting. If it was a close relative and I was going to be there a while, I would wait until their meal was being served and then I would go down to the cafe and get something and bring it back up to the room and we could 'eat together'. Otherwise, I would plan my visit between meals, pop in for a visit and then be on my way.

It gives a chance to stretch my legs and clear my thoughts to go out for a quiky meal, but if they person is critical, may just want to eat at the cafe.

Stop somewhere and grab a burger either before of after the visit. You cannot take food into the hospital, they don't want patients getting food that's not from the dietician, without asking first.

The hospital my father was at had no problem with me bringing in food for myself. (He had no diet, fed IV) I hated their cafeteria. I'd leave for 15 minutes for a burger and fries and a Mt. Dew and bring it back to his room. My husband said the hospital his former wife was in had a great cafeteria though.

I would pack a lunch.
My nephew was born six weeks ago. When I took my son's
to visit my nephew and sister at the hospital I packed
snacks and a lunch.

Edit:
Like mooshie I like the hospital food to!! The only opportunity
I have had to eat it was the three times I had my three son's
at the hospital.
