Yes.
There are several disorders that relate to this subject, most notably personality fugue disorder. If you've seen the movie "Sybil," then you know what it looks like.
It may look like the person is making it up, but keep in mind your brain can be wired very strangely. Just like some people hallucinate or develop amnesia after an accident, personality fugue may be cause by some emotional or mental trauma.
It manifests itself when the sufferer's brain is literally separated between different parts, each with a personality that represents it.
The separate parts may often have different genders, be from different places, may even be children, and usually specific events from a person's past may contribute to the development of these "characters."
Hope that helps.

I definitely do believe in multiple personalities. Check out Three Faces of Eve and Sybil. Both are based on true stories. Also, I have another personality. Her name is Fred. There was an entire year where she completely took over. I remember I was still there in the background observing everything, but I was not in control of my own body. Fred was. I've dealt with her over the years and all my own issues that probably contributed to her being around. She rarely shows up anymore.
In the case of your man, you don't give enough information to say for sure if he does suffer from multiple personality disorder. Only a doctor would be able to determine that and treat it. If he has not been truly diagnosed, I would suspect that it's just an excuse to see other people.

Sometimes "one" word can set another person off without an explanation.
I do believe in "multiple personalities" because a person can wake up in the morning in a bad mood.
God knows how many times in my life that I have said something that I regret to this day. Wish I can take it back, but I can't.

I dont know. My dad goes into these manic states and he acts like a complete different person. He doesnt claim to be someone else but he is different. I think there are people out there that fake their mental health problems to get attention or to get on disability so It's really hard to say who is faking it and who is not. Is it possible that people can really have a multiple personality disorder? yes I think so but the hard part is telling who is faking.

Multiple personalities is a mental DISORDER. It's real and requires years of medication and therapy. What your boyfriend has is a big fat fantasy that he can choose to love you on one level...but others on another. That's not multiple personalities...that's one non-committal personality.

Multiple personalities do exist in some people, but it is extremely rare. Is this an excuse for him to avoid making a committment?

Sure, like shirts. Have at least one different one for every day of the week. A few to spare helps as well.
Each personality can its own girlfriend or boy friend as it sees fit.
