To consider a horse old at a certain age depends on how hard they have been worked, if they have been taken care of well, etc.
Old is usually 20-25 depending on horse. Thats 44-55 in human years.
To calculate horse to human years you times the age of the horse by 2.2 so if a horse is 1 human years would be 2.2 at 2 years they would be 4.4 human years, etc. So your horse at 8 would be considered 17.6 human years.

For a horse, 8 years old is not too young, but not at all old. The horse still has many years ahead of it before it "gets old!" Old for a horse is anything from 20-35 years, more or less. Some horses are very long lived and can live as much as 35 or 40 years, while others live to a younger age.
Hope this helps!

The oldest recorded living horse is currently around 37 years old...I think that it is a Morgan. That is extreme, but most horses live well up into thier 20's if taken care of properly. I have a 27 year old Arabian mare who isn't ridden anymore but doesn't look a day over 20 years old.
If you are talking about "riding age", 20 is considered a senior horse. Though a few years back, the number one cash earning barrel racing mare in the US was 24 years old. It depends on the breed and the individual horse.

in case you prefer a advantageous using horse, then a 10 year previous is in all probability a tremendously risk-free wager. At 5-9 years horses are nevertheless youthful and in many situations excitable. If it extremely is your first horse, a 10-12 year mushy gelding or mare is in all probability a solid element to seem for. It additionally relies upon on the breed, and what you intend on doing with it: showing? entertainment/path rides? and so on. Horses survive regular approximately 20-30 years reckoning on their maintenance. as a results of this, a 10 year previous continues to be youthful - you are able to desire to very almost evaluate that a "preteen". 15-18 is while horses start up starting to be older, yet i've got ridden horses of their 20's until eventually now. desire this permits! :)

In human years your horse would be in his 20's
It all depends on the horse, My first horse was an Appaloosa Mare and when she was 31 she had a foal She had no problem keeping her weight and feed the colt while eating just grass with no added grains. Arthritis did get the best of her and at 33 I had Robin put down. Toby became my distance horse when he was 11 years old and gave me many years of riding. I know of several Arab that are in their late teen and early twenties, that year after year, go down the endurance or competitive trail and come home with year end awards. I think horse are like people, the more active you or your horse are, the healthier you will be and the longer you will live. If you would like to find out more about endurance riding you can go to: www.aerc.org
if you live in the Midwestern U.S. you can go to: umecra.com There is also a group of distance riders in Minnesota, their organization has an awesome web site where you can ask question or just chat. their web site is:mndra.com

It totally depends on the horse. Eight is still QUITE young, I don't consider a horse even 'middle-aged' until they are 12 or so. "Old" can be 18 or 28.
My horse didn't show even the smallest sign of old age until he was 23. I retired him at 31 and he died at 34 -- of a broken leg. Until then he still greeted me by cantering up to see me!
So it really depends on the horse -- but waiting until they are 3 years old before riding them will help tremendously in keeping them fit into old age.

Depending on the opinion, with no true medical fact, but only judgment given on a horse's age in non-human years is multiply by 4 years. In my book that I had to buy for my Equine Reproduction class, it discussed in the chapter of age and nutrition. Written by UC Davis professors. So, it all depends on who you ask and their studies.
My gelding is 29 years old. That is considered old.
Roughly, a horse is considered old about 25+. At this age, the Quarter Horse Association considereds the horse deceased and have to do a yearly update on sending 1) A picture of the horse 2) written statement the horse is either deceased or alive etc.
