If it's a modern house, with drywall on studs, just cut open the drywall, remove the critter, and put the drywall back. A little bit of spackle and drywall tape, and some paint, and you can fix the wall so that nobody will know.

Remove the wall and get it out if you don't want to smell it for about two weeks or longer.

Hope that it's a small one. It's going to stink for a while - depending on size, and if you have a dog or cat, they'll be enchanted by the smell.
