Probably because the sound is about 10 times louder to them than it is to us!!!

It all depends on how they are raised. If they were exposed (desensitized) to the loud noises of vaccums, lawn mowers, etc while they were young, they are not normally afraid later in life. It's a fight or flight response in pets who were not exposed to those sounds, thus, some fight the vaccum, and some run from it, depending on their personality

I don't really know. My cat constantly sits and hisses at the vaccume, I asked her why once, but oddly enough, she didn't answer me (lol). Personally, I'd be scared if some weird think that appeared to be threatening to suck me up came near me...I'd probably hiss and run too...lol...:)

because dogs have a sharp hearing sense. they can even listen to electricity passing through a cable. a vaccum to them is like listening to an airplaine noise to us.

Maybe the noise? My dog loves it though. I vaccuum his fur with it and pet him at the same time. Its a great way to get the excess hair off.
