How long have they shown a "squared off" appearance? They give birth on average every 28 days, but that's just an average - the actual time between births will vary.

If you know you're over the 30-40 day mark, try a large water change with the temperature a little different than the tank temperature. Sometimes that's all it takes. Or if you have another tank, set her up by herself with lots of plants for hiding. If she feels that she and the babies are better hidden, that can trigger hew as well.

Are you certain you have a male Swordtail? J.K.

Relax. Let nature run it's course. Unless you skip sleep and watch your fish 24/7 you can't be certain that the babies didn't get born and eaten. I suggest you make sure that there are plenty of plants with spaces that the fry could hide in and just let it all happen the way nature intended it to.

When you say you separated them I wonder if your using a trap where the fry can swim up through the divider just as easy as the fall down through it. The only trap I ever used that was effective at truly separating the fry from the mother was the Aqua Nursery.

I have had the same problem with my swordtails. The male follows the female around constantly and the female gets fat but never any babies. Maybe they are picky....who knows.
