My boyfriend's mom told me that what I was wearing was very inappropriate because I was showing my bra straps. Is it really that bad? I mean, all I was wearing was a spaghetti strap tank top with my bra and I don't have a strapless bra. I dress very nice in general. I never wear anything too appealing and a spaghetti strap tank and shorts is the most revealing thing I will ever wear, casual dress like. I mean, it's not like I am showing myself completely topless or showing my stomach or breasts because after all, they are just straps! I don't know. Now I am really paranoid and thinking about buying a strapless bra just so I don't look too tacky with my bra straps out.
Is it really that bad? Do some of you girls go out in public like that? Because I have so many tank tops and I wear my bra under all of them!

It used to be a big no-no to show your straps, but it has gotten more acceptance in recent years, since bras have become prettier and less utilitarian in design.
I try to buy tanks that will cover my straps, but I'm larger and have to wear supportive bras; but for average-sized girls, they make bras with thin straps so you can actually get it to look like it's part of the shirt if you match the color (a purple bra under a white or other color tank would look funny/tacky).
There are many options in bras with "convertible" straps that can be changed from regular, to criss-cross in the back to halter style. They also now have clear straps, but they're still somewhat visible.

Sounds like you dress a lot like I do. I've had a couple of complaints but not many. I've talked to my mom and she agrees with me. Some people are just very old fashioned, and think that it is completly wrong for any of your bra to show, the straps, or just the outline under you shirt. On the other hand, some girls do take it way to far, like wearing a black bra under a thin white shirt, and stuff like that.
But, if you want to earn points with her, either get a strapless, or plan on wearing a regular T when ever you go over there.

I think it kind of depends on the bra. The plain old white or beige bra strap showing is probably tacky. I think the pretty bras with a matching colored thin strap is probably okay. They do have some with clear straps that would not be as noticeable.
I think it is becoming more common place to have bra straps seen in public. I am under the impression that this is kind of a newer thing and the "older" crowd probably does not approve.
On a side note, frankly, she's your boyfriends mother - you could Mother Theresa and the woman would most likely find some kind of fault in you.

Painfully predictable from a potential mother-in-law. But you've got to humor such people to some extent in the real world, especially if you're in any way serious about her son.
If your breasts are big enough to support a strapless bra but not so big that a strapless bra won't support them properly, then get a strapless bra.
If your breasts are too small or too big for a strapless bra, then don't wear a tank top.
Strapless bras are best on B cups and sometimes are OK on small C cups. Don't try wearing them on A cups or D cups. A cups are too small to support the bra reliably and large Cs or Ds are too heavy to be properly supported.

Strapless bras can do wonders, but I suppose for his mother's sake, you should try to avoid the strap situation. There is this really neat adhesive bra you just stick on that my sister used during prom and she swears by it. Personally, I don't think that straps are "inappropriate", but his mom may just not have been brought up that way. Don't feel too paranoid and just check out this link to the bra my sister has. It might be a good investment if you are that worried about the strap situation. Good Luck!

Well honestly, it is tacky to have your bra straps show. But we all do it from time to time, myself included. Its reasons like that for which they invented the strapless bra. I would say that you should go out and buy one or two strapless bras. They can be pricy, but try to look at walmart or kmart. Some place inexpensive. Remember just because it doesn't say victoria secret doesn't mean that it wasn't made by the same people in the same country.
As far as your boy friend is concerned. Never let him tell you what to wear or what is appropriate. That is controlling behavior. You wear what you are comfortable with. Trust me, I speak from experience, it starts out with little things like that and snowballs into bigger more frequent things. Once they know that you take it to heart they will run with it!

That is not inappropriate or tacky. Especially with a purple bra! A lot of girls go into public like that.
Lots of exposed cleavage for girls is way more inappropriate.
If you are paranoid, you could buy a strapless bra. But, it looks fine.

There's nothing wrong with your straps showing. Wear a skin colored bra or a bra that is the same color as your tank top. Tell her it's better then not wearing a bra at all, right?

No, I dont think its tacky or inappropriate.
Pretty much all girls wear bras, and you cant always cover the straps with some shirts. Its not like its anything unusual to let them show.

You are fine showing a bra strap... provided it is not hot pink or anything like that under a white tank.
