Red discharge from the eye is usually not blood, but a substance called porphyrin. It is almost always a sign of illness. It occurs when there is stress from illness.

If this dischage happens more than once, you should go to the vet. What bedding is the hamster on? Pine/cedar bedding is toxic and will cause this discharge because of irratation. If the hamster is on pine, switch to a paper based bedding or aspen.

This is normal. They have a gland behind their eyeball called a harderian gland. It secretes lubricants that appear red in color. Don't worry. If the eye were damaged, the hamster would usually squint and rub at the eye. :)

Sounds serious. The best thing to do is to call the vet and ask someone there. They will tell you the correct thing to do.
