USVI is considered international travel. Bring your passport.

You DO NOT need a passport to travel from the United States to the US Virgin Islands. St Thomas is one of the US Virgin Islands so you do not need a passport.

There is much confusion over this because an announcment last year made a general reference regarding travel to and from "the Caribbean". Aruba is Danish so US citizens would need a passport. Anquilla is British and a US citizen would require a passport. St Thomas, St John, and St Croix are part of a US Territory -the US Virgin Islands. Traveling there from SF is like going from WA to NY. No passport required.

All of those who answered "yes you do need a passport" are completely WRONG..INCORRECT. If you are a US citizen you never need a passport to travel to/from the US Virgin Island, nor Puerto Rico. Both are considered to be part of the US. I was just in St Thomas 2 weeks ago and when we entered the USVI from another country they checked passports as though we were entering the US. Then when we came back through Puerto Rico to the US there was no passport check, nor any customs or immigration checks.

Wow... I can't believe how many people got this wrong, even though in your original question you clearly stated that you are traveling domestically to and from US soil. You will not need one. You are a US citizen traveling a US domestic route to New York. All you will need is ID. However, due to the proximity of the USVI to foreign nations/territories, and also due to the large amount of international traffic in this part of the world, I do recommend you travel with a passport to minimize any potential and problems that might arise.

You need to at least have applied for a passport. The original law change called for all US citizens to have a passport to travel out of the country even to non-state US territories. Because of this, the passport offices have been so swamped most people have had to wait over 3 monhts to receive their passport after applying. However, it was recently announced, that because of this delay, US citizens could fly with proof they had applied for the passport without actually having the passport in hand.
