...when people get a band's genre mixed up. Does this bother anyone else besides me? Screamo is totally different than Death Metal!

i don't think music should be boxed up too much. but i do hate it when people think pop bands are an alternative to the mainstream when they ARE the mainstream. and yes, there are stylistic differences between death metal and "screamo"

Genres are, for mine, a guideline at best. It seems that every day people try to pigeon hole music into ever smaller boxes. Fundamentally there are only two genres that matter to me. The music I like to listen to, and the music that I don't really care for (even though I can oft-times see the intrinsic value of it in terms of its ability to communicate, or musically).

Genres seem to me to be more of a marketing driven concept, designed to create an image that the listeners can identify with and then produce goods and services targetted at that genre. It's all part of developing the tribal mentality in an increasingly homogenised world. For many, creating a recognisable difference bewteen the "we" and the "not we" is a very important part of establishing their identity. Markers of tribal "boundaries" such as clothing, the music they listen to, the way they use language, behavioural affectations and many other differentiators are designed to be exclusory, keeping out the people you do not wish to associate with.

As each group gets larger, they have to divide so that each person can retain their individuality. So "emo" forms as a sub-group of goth, then itself splits into geek emo, post-rock emo, goth emo nerd emo etc.

To the unitiated the differences between screamo, death metal, gloom metal, speed/thrash metal, industrial metal and goth metal are well nigh indistinguishable. The differences are more based on what makes the adherents feel identified as individuals than musical.

I agree. I mean sometimes it is hard to categorize a band because it could be more than one genre, but yeah, when it's something like screamo and death metal, it's pretty obvious that they're different.

I find "genres" to be not very helpful in describing music. Everybody's got their own definition of pop, rock, metal, etc.
