The fish is male, three years old, 5" long. My sister has all kinds of products for it, but I don't know what to do while she is gone. I know you will probably tell me that he is going to die, but what at all can I do? My sister is gone with my parents to get a bigger fish tank so he will have more oxygen, but won't be back for a couple of hours. Anything I can do now?

He is still alive, gasping for air with gills protruding out of the water.

Do a water change of 50% making sure you refill the water with conditioned water (use dechlorinator) and that the water you used to refill is the same temperature as the water in his tank. He sounds like he has septicemia so it doesn't look good for him but all you can do right now is the water change. I wouldn't use any product except the dechlorinator and read the directions on the bottle as far as how much to use.

Nitrites cause burns on fish so thats what is happening to him, they make the fins turn black.
Nitrite/Nitrate poisoning is caused by the same activities as ammonia poisoning. Nitrite/Nitrate poisoning has the same symptoms as ammonia poisoning, and can be tested by a Nitrite/Nitrate water test kit. The best course of action, is to reduce feeding, make frequent partial water changes until the compounds are reduced, and increase the aeration in the water.

Sounds like it's too late.... was the water clean? Did you do frequent water changes? Monitor PH?

The water quality is very important when keeping a fish tank. Also, if there are other fish int he tank, expect them to get sick as well.

feels like ammonia is on your tank... you may clear out the water extra beneficial than it apparently is, and upload some issues, i exploit nutrifin cycle, it helps get rid of ammonia i bought my goldfish bobbert from the puppy shop, with black fins, a mohawk, and mustache.. i presumed it became lovable on the start... then I discovered the reason of it and am now taking extra beneficial good care of my fish... all his black is long gone now :D

It might just have a diease or an Illness. I would seperate it for while, And if it does die, it wont poison the other fish if you have any.
