It's not sure if the French elite GIGN (Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale) were there as advisors, if they joined the fight together with the Pakistani and Egyptian special forces, if they had to undergo a pro-forma conversion at all, or even how many there were (the estimates vary between 3 and 40). Saudi sources never mention the French troops, so there's no sure way of knowing their exact role.

Probably.
In the Islamic faith, proclaiming your faith in Allah as the only God and Mohamed as His prophet is theoretically enough to make you into a Muslim. If that's the only thing you do, you're not really much of a Muslim, but in theory, you're still a Muslim.
