There are dozens of different birth control pills out there, each with slightly different hormones and doses. A few are triphasic, like OrthoTriCyclen, which means there are three different types of pills you take over the course of a month. This one is the best at getting rid of periodic acne. Most other pills are monophasic, which means you get a constant hormone level all month.

Recently, there have been lower dosage pills, like OrthoTriCyclen Lo and Yaz. These ones have lower side effects, but a higher risk of pregnancy. There are also pills that reduce periods. Yaz has a 3 day period I believe. Seasonale has a period every 90 days. There is a new pill out now that has no periods. However, you can do this with regular birth control pills (monophasic only) by skipping the placebo pills that usually give you a period.
