I just dropped an engine in my 92 Grand Am. I never drove it before this. I drove it for the first time today. Around town it did fine. I got on the interstate for fifteen miles. When I got off the ramp and hit my first red light, CLUNK!! It stalled, like I didn't push the clutch in, but this is an automatic transmission. I started it, then dropped it into drive. CLUNK! Again I started it and , CLUNK! I know absolutely nothing about an A/T. If there is a tranny specialist out there that can help, I'd appreciate it.
Now for the strange part. I got in it this afternoon, drove it home. No problems. No stall, no nothing, just like a new car. I am stumped and broke now. Any advise would be cool and the Gang.

The lockup clutch in the torque converter isn't disengaging. Could be a stuck valve in the tranny. It could also be a wiring problem.

i think it is in your Torque converter i had the same thing happen to me once was told it was the lockup part of the Torque converter witch locks it in for over drive on mine there was a square type plug in on the front side of the trans by the radiator had 4 wires to it i just unpluged it.. lost about 2 miles to the gallon of gas but it never done it again drove the car 3 years after that then sold it mine was a buick hope this helps

This is really odd. I too was never familiar with an Automatic transmission after driving stick for all of my life. It sounds as if you may want to change your fluid and give it some time to free up. These things can be a pain in the Assprin...if ya get my drift. I hope this helps! Best of luck!!!

what is the mileage on the engine and transmission? and pull the dipstick and smell the fluid. Im pretty sure already the fluid is burnt and that this is not you buying a few parts and slapping them in. The transmission is on its way out. Park the car where you want it to stay. It is not going far. You need to completely rebuild this transmission. I suggest you dont blow it up. Because right now its rebuildable. If it locks up and goes bang your screwed and it will cost even more money. PARK THE CAR NOW.

If the trans was idle for a long time it is possible that a valve-body, clutch pack etc. hung up upon first use. Then with heat and lubrication they freed up. I would change the fluid and filter.

You better make sure the engine or tranny isn't falling off the mounts, or the bell housing isn't coming loose on either end.
