I have a 1995 Honda Accord and I need a new engine. I'm told a brand new engine would cost me about $5000. I definitely can't afford this kind of debt and a new car just isn't in the stars for me right now unless I come into some money or meet a kind-hearted rich person. It seems my only other option is to get a re-manufactured engine, but I'm not sure if going to the dealer where I purchased my car is the best option.

When I had the automotive shops, I always went with a Jasper re-manufactured engine if an engine was needed for replacement. Their quality was top notched and 100% on their warrenty. If you decide not to used the Honda store, choose an independent shop that has a good reputation that does engine installations.

The dealer would be the worst choice. If you can't afford a Jasper, any good engine swapper can access a database that will tell him where a good used engine is available. Spending $5000 on a $2000 car probably wouldn't be that good an idea. Even a used engine for that old thing would be a real gamble. The transmission and a hundred other things are old and worn out, and you could be pouring money into it forever.

A dealer will charge you so much money that your head will spin. You need to find a reputable mechanic that you trust.
Look up some shops in the yellow pages and have a guy (Dad, boyfriend, brother) accompany you and talk to some of these shops. This will save you a whole bunch of money.
Believe me.

There are a number of places in the US that import low mileage used motors from Japan, much cheaper than new or rebuilt, nearly as good. Check your yellow pages or Internet. In Dallas TX area it is East River Import Car, maybe they ship.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have a warranty that not only covers the replacement engine, but will also cover the cost of removal and installation. I ran into that. They covered the engine, but not the cost to have it changed again.
