That is so strange, I was using the toilet while in McDonald's a few weeks ago and thought the very same thing. I came to the conclusion it was in case anyone collapsed or got stuck in the toilet, someone would be able to get to them. If you think about it, the cubicles are very small. If someone had to knock the door down, I'm sure it would injure the person trapped inside.

This is just a guess, but I would think that the walls don't meet the floor in order to make the floor faster and easier to clean. A mop can reach under and around much more easily and can take a broader stroke if it doesn't get stopped by a wall. Also, it's more sanitary in that there are fewer crevices (where the wall meets along the floor) that gunk can get trapped in. As for the gaps at the door. I don't know that either but would guess that's so that the door opens and closes more easily over time. Even though it might get slightly askew, it wouldn't bind.

Well I suppose if the lock gets stuck the space is enough for most people to get out if they had to without having to scream for help.
Also, some people tend to feel very claustophobic in spaces that feel too closed in and dark.

Because that's enough for most people and it's easier to build and maintain. Plus you don't want someone locking themselves in (or out).
What's the deal with the people who freak out about stuff like that?

Its so you can tell if people are peeing or pooing....
Feet towards to toilet.. peeing..
Feet away from the toilet.. pooing..
Also key things to note.. pants around the ankles.. usually a dead giveaway... As for girls... It gets tricky.. try wikipedia
Anyway this is important per the Patriot Act...
