Someone told me that if you're caught DWI in Sweden, you lose your driver's license for life. Does anybody know if this is true? And what do you think about this punishment?

You don't automatically lose your license for life in Sweden, the punishments vary, but there are no extenuating circumstance, you will always lose your license for DUI and they take it off you on the spot.

For a first offence it's usually somewhere between 1 and 10 months, and for second or more, it could be jail time and multi-year driving bans. Also if you've only had your license for under 2 years, and lose it, you have to resit the driving test to get your license back.

Many European countries have much harsher penalties for DUI/DWI offenses than we have in the United States. The problem here in the United States is that our mass transit system can't even begin to compare with the transit systems in Europe. We are essentially forced to drive ourselves everywhere.
