I have just built a PC, and when I attempt to turn it on the fans and lights come on for a split second and immediately turn back off. I have attached the HD, DVD drive, all the fans and lights. I have the MOBO LED on. I checked the BIOS jumper and all my connections. Thought it was the power supply so I go a new one and the same thing still happens. I haven't put the video card in yet would that matter?

Installed Video Card, same problem. Re-seated CPU fan, no difference.

Did you also install a new motherboard to the case or an old motherboard to a new case? If so, check to see if the motherboard is installed correctly or it will short out before it starts. I did this a while back because I forgot to use the plastic retainers that shielded the motherboard from the case.

You know that is the problem if you have a few parts left over from the installation.

Start with the very basics: Memory and Video card. You don't need a hard drive, DVD, lights, etc to run a basic PC. Yes, it won't function, but if you're not getting the same symptoms, you know it's one of those components that's doing it. If it doesn't do it, start adding components back in, one at a time, until you find the faulty component.

If it does still do it with the most basic parts, then you have a problem with one of them. The biggest problem is figuring out which one it is. I'm sure you don't have a spare CPU, Memory, or Video card lying around to test them out, so check with a friend and see if they do. You can borrow them or swap your component into his computer to test it there. You shouldn't damage anything doing this.

I had a problem similar to this, but the technology was so new that I didn't have anyone to swap components with. I ended up replacing the mother board, memory, and video card to find out that it was the CPU that was causing the problem. Mine would run fine for awhile but then reboot at seemingly random times.

Good luck to you. Hopefully you don't have to find out the expensive way what is wrong.

Is your power supply enough for everything that you have in your computer? Usually this isn't a problem unless your supply is really weak. If you have enough power supply, then it could be a number of problems.

Also try checking wether your heatsink/cooler is good still. Also try disconnecting everything and press F8 to bring up boot screen. Atleast that should be workign and then work backwards. If this doesn;t help then email us. Its free.

Yes, the video card should be installed before power-up. Disconnect the DVD, HDD and any other non-essential devices until you get the PC to boot up. You should be able to access the BIOS, at least.

The problem, I think, is your CPU heat sink is not installed properly.

I have had this on a couple of PCs, one newly build (just 3 months old) both times it was the power supply, looking at your spec you might want to upgrade it to 900W or 1000W just to be sure it can handle the load if you are using it for gaming.

Double check the fan and the heatsink on the cpu. When the cpu gets too hot, the system will usually shut down.
