Regarding your 2nd question, I assume it's because love is a theme that captivates people more easily than any other one. It's a question of preferring to waste your time to relieve your mind with soft lyrics about love and not to torment it with tragic ones about other themes. Of course, some lyrics that approach love are very tragic, but even these ones can hardly be so anguishing as the ones that talk about more serious things, such as wars, drugs, accidents, etc...

Just Like Heaven, by the Cure (I used to serenade my girlfriend with this one while we danced to it in college) or In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel )serenaded another girl once while we danced together (also in college).
Not every song is about love.
