my cousin claims she is gothic yet she doesn't look gothic at all. she only has peircings on her ears and one peircing on the end of eyebrow thing. but she doesn't dress gothic. she doesn't look it and i don't know what music she listens to. how do you know the difference between a person who is just claiming to be gothic and when they are actually are?

why cant people be themselves anymore instead of copying other people? when I was a teenager, I did go through the goth stage but I realized that it wasnt me and i didnt like dressing in drab colors all the time. She is just going through teenage rebellion

Not all goths wear black clothes, fishnets, leather, makeup, piercings etc. Gray, white, purple, red are also colors incorporated into some personal styles, even all white has been done. The Fashion is a part of it but not the defining part. Each individual has a different style. Some call themselves goth and some prefer not. Some may be quiet and others not. Being passionate, tolerant, intelligent are a few generally common things. Personality varies as much as does each person. So there's no single behavior or characteristic. And age doesn't matter. The culture itself isn't different in other countries but you'll find people with different styles within it as you would anywhere. Goth, if they know what it is, the bands from which it started and like the music, the subculture, have "it" in them rather than pretending and/or being caught up in the appearance they're gothic. Those who are not, regardless of appearance, who are the opposite are not, but the thing is you don't know for sure unless you know the person. It's an innate thing that is just given a means of individual expression by the subculture. You say she doesn't know what music she listens to. What are her absolute favorite bands? Look at her music collection or ask her to name some. Does she say Bauhaus, Souxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy or have any of those? Ask her how it started and got it's name. Does she know? These also will be your indicator. Hope this helps.

Most true Goths do wear black, have very pale skin & usually wear dark makeup. Now, Goths are actually quite romantic (even if in a 'dark' way), very passionate, non- judegmental and some of the nicest/ friendliest people I have ever met. They accept everyone as they are. Most are surprised to know that a large number of Goths are vegan. They do have strong political beliefs- they just don't throw them in your face... Being Gothic is not something you try to do. You just are. It goes beyond fashion.
(note- no I am not gothic although some say I border on it)

I agree with you "B" Gothic is not something you try to be you just are and it does go beyong clothing, well said. People have turned the word Gothic into a different meaning. And true goths don't say i'm "gothic" and they don't label themselves as being gothic.

Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

Gothic people, usually wear dark cloths, interesting accessories and have long hair.
Just because she has piercings does not mean she is Gothic.

Gothic in England uk.
Black hair, makeup and clothes... piercings ..tongue,lots of ears rings, eyebow and lip piercings...bangles .
Heavy boots with lots of chains and chains on clothing.
listens to heavy metal screaming music to commit suicide too.
I know this cos my once beautiful daughter is one...scared what she wil get pierced next?????

they are expressing emotions and feelings but more than half of goth are POSERS!!!! also i mean black is the most awesomest colr ever!!!
