We are sue happy because some people are opportunists who will spring at the opportunity to make a buck at someone else's expense. The system including juries and judges are foolish enough to go along with it paving the way for more sue-happy people to come along! Another reason is that in today's society the prevailing wisdom is that the system is responsible to keep everyone safe from harm of any form. If someone gets hurt, it can't just be an accident or their own misfortune. It must be due to someone's negligence, be it a person, or a business. Unfortunately, this mindset is dangerous to society, because people are losing the tendency to ensure their individual responsibility for everything in their life from what they eat to where the go for recreation and the list goes on. Doctors can't afford to have a private practice with the costs of malpractice insurance. Also in an overly litigious society (which we now have) there tend to be restrictions on everything and CYA (cover your a$$) policy is everywhere. It gets really annoying sometimes!

We are a sue happy society because we live in a capitalist society. We lost our innocence 60 years ago when we finally realized we could no longer be isolationists.

Sometimes I think that suing is like the 'poor man's lottery.' People who do not feel that they have a sense of power and control over their lives, especially economically, look for opportunities to get back at a system that seems to have failed them.

It is all about money and greed. And we can get away with it. I still don't understand the McDonald's coffee one. The woman should have known better than to place a hot cup of coffee between her legs. She knew the coffee was hot.

Our society is so money hungry and the only way to really hurt someone is to take their money.
