I had to explain to one of my co-workers today why he offended others. Among other recent "jokes," he asked a Muslim woman "What the hell you got under that scarf?" and a gay man if he was going to be the bride or groom at his commitment ceremony. He accused me and my boss of wanting him to be "politically correct" and act "like a robot with no sense of humor." Of course this isn't what anyone wants! It's just that some "jokes" are insulting and don't help morale at an office.

I'm just wondering, why do people who make rude and prejudiced comments so often accuse others of "political correctness" and having no sense of humor? I hear it a lot, but I guess I don't understand it. How do you get through to people who think they have the right to make those kinds of comments and act as if you're just oversensitive and humor-deprived if you take offense?

You are absolutely right - I worked with a man who had a similar sense of humor and it just creates for an uncomfortable and disrespectful environment. People should joke around and create a light-hearted atmosphere at work however, especially in a professional environment, there have to be limits. You are there to be productive as is everyone else and if you are making people uncomfortable then you are hindering their productivity. People do need to understand common courtesy, but honestly, people lack that in many different regards of their life including friendships, relationships, social events/places so I'm not surprised that these things take place at work!

a rapid poll of my gay acquaintances shows none of them have been indignant via that remark... And the Muslim remark, to me, looks no longer lots diverse from asking what a Scotsman wears decrease than his kilt. i'm a pagan, and that i as quickly as had a intense college instructor say, "you'll be drained lots, what with sacrificing cats on the hours of darkness and all that..." THAT became offensive. what's the adaptation? The comments you listed did no longer make ignorant accusations approximately yet somebody else's existence-style - they have been in easy terms a lame attempt at humor. If he'd alledged that the gay guy became into beastiality, or that the muslim lady helps suicide bombers, it could be diverse.
