Pro music shops have these plugs that I think are referred to as musicians ear plugs, they allow sound through so you can hear clearly, just at a lower volume as opposed to a dead and muffled sound from conventional ear plugs.

Problem is, these can be expensive, 500-1000 bucks for a professional pair.

In Europe we've these earplugs called Ohropax (German made).

They are made of wax with cotton coating.

I've 2 dogs that love to "chant" and have a "chat" with other dogs at awfully unsociable hours (ie 3.30 am).

Well, let me tell you that Ohropax blocks the b*sterds , so I guess it'll also work for drumming!
