If it is saying you are running low on hard drive space then you can clean up by deleting programs you dont use on the control panel>add/remove programs list. Also, some worm viruses will use up your hard drive space by replicating themselves thousands of times. Run a virus check if you have one.
If it is saying your memory is low this is different. To clean up some resident memory, you can turn off unecessary start programs. To do this, click Start then Run. Type in MSCONFIG and press enter. Now, when the window pops up, click on the Startup tab. Look through the list and try removing some programs you dont recignize. If you find that you need this program to run, just redo the process and replace the check mark. Also, after you reboot, its going to warn you about what changes you've made, just put a checkbox in the "Do not show this again" section so it doesn't keep showing the message when you boot.

Well, First of all it depends how much you had in the start.
Since i don't know everything about your computer , i'll try to answer as well as i could.
If you had this problem ever since you got your computer, then you may just have a small Hardrive. it could be that your RAM isn't sufficient enough.
Or you could have programs which are very large, which are hiding. Remember to empty your recycle bin. ( this is based on windows )
Now to go to my computer and right click on your main drive (usually C) and it will tell you how much memory you have.
Now enter the drive and do this for all the folders, enter the one with the most files. The trick is to find the folders with too much data that you don't need, then delete some.
REMEMBER don't delete anything in the WINDOWS folder or PROGRAM FILES or you will have an even more wrecked computer.
The other option is the source that's telling you this. Is it a blue screen then your computer shutsdown? Is it a program which asks you to download something?
I suggest you also run a virus and spyware scan
Good Luck

memory (mb) is like what you keep on your desk
storage (gb) is like what you keep in your desk
you can delete as much music and just as many programs as you want
but untill you add more memory you still have the same problem
If you are getting that and you just recently got your computer then I think you have 256mb consider a 512mb of the same type
if you go to http://crucial.com they can scan your computer and tell you what type you need.
better yet add your 256mb stick to your new 512mb stick
for a sub-standard of 768mb
1024mb (1gb) is standard

Memory has nothing to do with data on hard drive.
Try to increase your RAM
Alternatively right click on my computer and select properties
then click advanced Click on first setting tab
click advanced
click change at the bottom
and change your virtual memory setting on your drives
computer will ask for restart after you have changed settings
restart
The message will now disappear

right click MY COMPUTER and select Properties, Make sure that the RAM number matches what you are supposed to have installed. If it doesn't, make sure the RAM chips are solidly installed and that no dust in interfering with the contacts.
Next press CTRL+ALT+DEL to call up the Task Manager. Click the Processes tab to see what's hogging your memory also the Performance tab to see a graph of chip usage.
