Well, it depends how often you need to have your carpets cleaned...Do you have pets/kids? Combo? Is your carpet heavily soiled? You can always buy a commercial carpet cleaner for personal use...They can get expensive- Or you can rent one I've seen them rent a Rug Doctor for as low as $16 per day. I have kids/dog and husband and I just prefer to either rent on or hire someone atleast once a year..

The bissell proheat 2x is a great steam cleaner.
The only thing I don't like is the bissell formula. It doesn't seem to be strong enough.
I use a different steam cleaning formula for my machine (a more commercial strength formula). It's a bit stronger but I have 3 dogs and I need that added cleaning strength.

I bought a steam carpet cleaner at Sears for under $200 and it works great. And very easy to use. And cheaper than hiring someone. If you do hire someone WATCH your valuables. Some of them steal.

for a stain rub toothpaste on it...let it stand for a few minutes than scrub it out...
