When replacing your tires does it matter if you get a different brand as long as the size is the same. I want to take my spare a BF Goodwrench P245/70R16 and replace the rear tires. However I am finding it hard to find the same brand tire. If I buy a Firestone of the same size will it be alright?

Every person who answered so far missed one very important fact. You gave us a light truck tire size. This means there is a good chance your vehicle has 4 wheel or all-wheel drive. If so, you need to check with the vehicle manufacturer and/or consult your owners manual. On some 4WD and virtually all AWD systems mixing tires of different brands can cost you up to several thousand dollars in transfer case and differential repairs. I've seen this happen multiple times. As long as you replace all 4 with matching tires and they are the correct size, speed and load rating for your vehicle then you can use whatever brand you want and then and only then will you be golden. Doesn't sound like that's your plan though.

If it is a 2WD then you can replace tires in pairs and keep the matching pairs on the same axle. My experience though is that people who do this don't take care of their tires as well as people who replace them all at the same time and end up spending more on tires over the life of the vehicle.

The brand does not matter.
The only difference when comparing a tire of the same size is the speed rating. The higher the rating, usually the higher the price.

Speed Rating
The speed rating denotes the speed at which a tire is designed to be driven for extended periods of time. The ratings range from 99 miles per hour (mph) to 186 mph. These ratings are listed below.

Note: You may not find this information on all tires because it is not required by law.

Q 99 mph H 130 mph
R 106 mph V 149 mph
S 112 mph W 168 mph*
T 118 mph Y 186 mph*
U 124 mph

*For tires with a maximum speed capability over 149 mph, tire manufacturers sometimes use the letters ZR. For those with a maximum speed capability over 186 mph, tire manufacturers always use the letters ZR.

Brand doesn't matter one bit. Everytime I get new tires I get a different brand. As long as the size is right, your golden.
