What type of filter/pump is the best choice for my above ground pool?

The choice really depends on what you're looking for. Of the 3 types of filters, maintenance and water clarity often go in reverse order of each other with these three filter types. Sand,is generally the easiest to maintain, but will filter least efficiently. Cartridge filter will filter and bit better than sand (usually), and D.E. filters will offer the best filtration, but generally have the highest maintenance. (which can often be offset by sizing up the filter.)

I use a 24 sq ft DE filter on my 21' round a/g pool (big enough for some small ingrounds, depending on the pump output), and last year only need to backwash once all season. (May - Sept here.) If you want the best water quality, this is the way to go.

A cartridge filter will filter the smallest particles but requires the most work and highest expense to maintain. DE filters are next in line and filter particles a little less efficiently than cartridge filters. The only real ongoing expense in DE filters is the DE media which is purchased at any pool supply. The cheapest and least troublesome filtration is with a sand filter. They require little care and will operate for years virtually maintenance free. I would recommend the DE filter for overall performance and ease of use.

I have sand and am happy but I understand DE is better. (Diatomaceous Earth)
