What kind of test would require you ro memorize file extensions? There are thousands of different extensions and most computers are defaulted to hide them because you don't usually need to know them.

Some of the important ones are:

.exe = executable file (it's a program, like 'sol.exe' is the program that plays Solitaire)

.doc = a document (like from a word processor)

.dll = dynamic linking library (a programs little helper)

.jpg = joint photographic group (a picture from a digital camera)

.txt = plain text (like from NotePad)

.pdf = portable document file (from Adobe so that documents always look the same on any computer)

.mp3 = compressed music format for the computer's Media Player

There are thousands more...

Just remember this: The file extension, identifies each file to the computer so that it may use the appropriate program to open the file.

I just know them by heart because I work with the computer and different files so much but you can just remember everyone has a period at the begining. .exe is exicusive file, .doc is a document, .pdf is a pdf, . gif is a moving picture, .mpeg is a video. Notice how most of them have letters in the full name.
