1991 Mazda 929S gear problems. HELP!?

The car does not shift above 2nd gear (it's an automatic transmission, too).

Typically, how much does it cost to have a mechanic repair this problem?

Maybe you just THINK it's in drive.

From "Park", count three clicks in the shifter as you move it slowly.
Does the gear indicator point to something other than "D"?
