In 2006 the United States spent over half a trillion dollars on military spending. That's more than the rest of the world combined.
At the same time we ranked outside the top 20 nations in charitable contributions as a percentage of gross domestic product. We gave just over $12 billion to charity in 2006. That's less than the cost overruns on a single military project like the F22 fighter.
The US has the resources to end starvation on the planet without increasing taxes a penny, but we spend it on war instead.
This is because our leaders and media keep us in a constant state of fear. Remember, there really weren't any weapons of mass destruction, it was a lie.
Would you like to live in a nation that's the salvation of the world, or the greatest killing machine in history?

The reactions show such a polarized view I am not sure anything can be done -
But I do like the concept of mimicking back the lingo to certain groups - it does seem to be an effective way to make a point - But here is the caution - In order to make a point the other side must be willing to listen and listening to the other side is why some Conservatives blame liberals for treason
To a Conservative to listen to anyone else is a bad thing and a sign of treason - So they aren't allowing themselves to hear anything but what their side tells them - Hard to have a conversation that way -
Now how anyone could object to spending money on the youth and education health roads and such is beyond me - but they are convinced the answer is to put everyone into the military - Which is really odd - Military culture is the ultimate in totalitarianism - Complete control complete state run feedings and thinking and and and - Everything that the Conservative say they fight against - is in the military -
They don't want freedom they want an ant colony - Just an American ant colony - I am not sure what it would take for them to see the contradictions they present -

Well, for one thing, the education system in this country needs major help and is a problem. There is not enough focus on teachers and teaching. If we just spend more, we won't be fixing anything.
The military isn't a problem. Do we budget enough for the military? Not for what the country is expecting them to do right now. That's not a problem with the military, it's a problem with the policy makers.

Remember RayGun warned us that the Nicaraguans were going to come up through Mexico
(He didn't say what they were gonna do when they got here)
90% of the money that goes to the military is stolen by the military industrial complex.
$ 500 toilet seats and $ 700 hammers are shrouded in a veil of patriotism....How dare you question this corporate crime you commie pinko liberal
In 2006 we spent more on our military than the rest of the world...combined
Are we planning on invading the rest of the world ?
Wait. Really, are we ?

The military is actually successful and it wouldn't be 'throwing money at the problem.' On the contrary, our education system is in shambles, thanks to the PC way of not giving kids grades, giving blue ribbons for everything, not grading papers in red ink, etc. That system needs an overhaul, and money is not going to help, they need a brand new system. Maybe all schools should be military schools.
EDIT: I gave Vegaswoman a 'thumbs down,' but it was supposed to be a 'thumbs up.' Sorry :(

Of course. All that money is going to go to the troops, supplies for the troops and research so that new technologies can be developed in order to give us the advantage over our enemies.
Perhaps you or someone else would like a fair fight, but when it comes to the U.S. vs. Country X, I want us to have the upper hand and I want every other country that's watching us kick Country X's *** to think twice before pissing us off.

You see here's the difference. The military produces good citizens, National Security and good results. They are a contributor. Education is broke and no amount of money is going to teach these kids any better. Why pay the same inept teachers more money, it will not make them any better teachers?

Not without the domestic spending to accompany it. Why defend a country when it doesn't provide a good offense for its citizens: education, healthcare, and employment.

Well....whether money is "thrown" at education or not... Many of the posters on this board and in our society abroad prove that whether money is thrown or not into education is definitely a needed thing.
As for our defense... a large budget is needed.
