I opened the box under my hood of my 97 Dodge Stratus. It is the box that says "multipoint fuel injection" on top. It is a 2.4 engine. I stupidly sprayed a lot of starter fluid in what I think was the air intake inside, and it blew the top off and broke it. I have had the car repaired with a new fuel pump, and sensors ($1050) and the tech said I must get a new "air box" for it to run corrrectly. Right now he duck taped it and it starts ruf, once it runs a little while it runs fine. He says it is because I need a new "air box" that seals better. I call parts stores and they don't know what I am talking about. What do you call this?

Take your car to any part store and they'll be happy to look at it and tell you no charge.
Just in case you haven't learned yet... don't spray starter fluid in there again.... you should know better than that....

Alright, first off: I'm assuming you mean 500-600 idle speed. 5000 is the redline, and with typical driving you should rarely be going above 2,000 anyway. Is that your idle speed in park or in drive? In drive, I typically see my 96 5.2 idle at 600. It sounds like it's running richer than hell because of air intake problems or a vacuum leak. I would highly recommend going back to your local junkyard and getting a stock airbox from one of the many Rams there. It will only cost about $20 typically. While there, look at the emissions sticker under the hood. It lists all the vacuum hoses and where they go. Make sure they all match and the hoses look good.

sounds like the flexible intake tube is what you are looking for

if it is split then the sensors will get bad readings and not allow the engine to run properly or at all

old timers call this the air box, but it is indeed part of the intake but usually referred to as the flexible intake or intake tube, you can also fix it by getting a high flow intake kit that have a new tube and air filter
