Hi :)
I am mexican, I just moved to the US recently out of economic necessity, but I am getting increasingly depressed because this country or at least Houston is such a sad unloving environment, I was wondering how do you manage to survive in such a materialistic and shallow society. Is it possible to ever have a trully fullfilling life here? I can't stand the food, the music, the TV, religious beliefs, school system it all seems shallow, depressing, unloving, phony, arrogant, violent, uninteresting and so on.
Any ideas on how to integrate into the society without loosing your moral values?

Herre is a good suggestion from a born and raised American family.
If you don't like it here. GO HOME!
There are many people who would jump at the chance to be an American. You are taking up a slot that is obviously not deserved!

Our society is very individualistic, but that doesn't mean you still can't make friends, etc. You just have to look around and find the place where you belong. Also, I don't think our society is materialistic or shallow, we just don't have enough time to do things in one day, so don't let that get to you. I don't understand though, how you could come here and expect it to be the same as over there. It's a completely different culture. That is expected when you move some place foreign.

Hi! I'm an American and I feel the same way most days about our society. I plan on working/traveling at National Parks. I've visited many in my life and found the overall atmosphere to be quite refreshing due to the mix of culture that seemed to be present from all the worldwide tourists. Personnally, when I visited Western TX, New Mexico, Arizona, So. Cal. Parks, I enjoyed myself very much due to the Mexican/Spanish culture (people, food, etc.) Peace and Good Luck.

the first guy that answerd is sharp. i'm from california, and visiting austin, texas now. let's get the hell out of this oppressive dive on the same bus!!!!!!!!! Honestly though, in getting around some, Salt Lake City has a good size latino community, and the streets are clean, low crime, good school system there-all those things i can't say for here. and the mormons? no different than all the christians, protestants and whatnot shoving stuff under my nose here. i'm biracial, and visiting there, i never heard any racial stuff. here, i hear it daily. trust the first guy, texas sucks. i'm leaving too. let's bail!

hi, i am me. i dont consider myself any race or denomonation except that i am Gods child and to see that in each person i see. I am a person, like you are. i feel, as you do. and if you can look at the world this way you will start to see a change in the way you see things, and the way you think. you will not see a society, or a certain food or religious beliefes, you will see a person, a child of God, in all people.

Just move somewhere else. Alot of cities seem like you are in Mexico. The town next to mine has about 50 Mexican establishments from restaurants, stores, jewelry stores, beauty salons, car lots, dental offices, to you name it.

Come to Cali. They are more people here that are going through the same thing and we are not that ignorant. It's Texas what can you expect from them. Ignorance and lack of education is what they are known for. Look at the President. (Enough said)

I would suggest to move back to Mexico or where ever you came from, where you like the food, TV, religious beliefs and school system.
Dont intergrate into our society unless you truley love the place.

you recently moved to the U.S. and already know english? how old are you? I live in dallas and I know what you mean when i first moved here, everything was like dark, you rarely saw your neighbors out or anything fun to do. in mexico everything is more livelier. you just have to find your self some friends, and go out play sports and everything you are interested in. you will get used to it soon.

Step 1: Get the Hell out of Texas. I can't imagine living in Houston ... the smog, the heat, the Texans. Scary!
