Eleanor Rigby deals with growing old, loneliness and, ultimately, dying alone. Elenor is particularly tragic character as not only is she lonely, but she has to see others at their happiest (remember she is picking up rice after a wedding). The lyrics work even better because they are set to the sad, melancholic sound of the violins and cellos. I think it's the Beatles first really great, thoughtful song.

The song is about lonliness and isolation. Many people fear being alone, the song can be scary in this sense to some.

It does have an almost eerie melancholic feel to it. It wasn't meant to be scary though, I don't think.

I think "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is much scarier. I mean, he's a serial killer. It's like the model for "Paranoia Agent."

Not scary, but sad. What was it that you deemed not simply sad, but scary? "Died in the church," perhaps? That was just a way to say she died in a state of grace and so could be buried in the church yard, in hallowed ground.
