Why not use the oil while it's there? Ethanol is more expensive. But I will say I'm an Earth First person. We'll drill the other planets later! Sorry, just had to use that line.

Well, here's the deal, Ethanol is a CLEANER version of gasoline, but it still causes pollution, but in smaller volumes. The most sufficient way that there is right now is Hydrogen and Air. Yes air. Watch Futurecar on Discovery. It's real neat. Anyways, there is a lot of money in the oil industry right now and the oil companies don't want to convert because they know that ethanol is cheaper and so is hydrogen and all that. They are only interested in money and something needs to be done about that. Anyways, Ethanol is said to be environmentally safe, but there are a lot of people out there that will lie just to make more money for themselves.

The US will get off oil when two things happen. 1. Ethanol becomes an economically viable solution. 2. When the oil industry and auto makers get out of the pockets of Washington.

We will stop using oil the moment it disappears. Not a minute sooner.

As for right now, ethanol is not efficient enough (production wise) to be used solely as fuel. But it has become a gasoline additive.

WHY?
Ethanol takes almost as much energy to produce as it provides when it is burned as fuel.
It if far more expensive than gasoline if you tax them equally.
The environmental benefits and advantages are very questionable.
Using agriculture to produce it will increase the cost of food.
BIO-DIESEL on the other hand is environmentally better, costs less and gives better efficiency.

No. Quite simply, the oil industry would never let that happen.
