You are more busy and distracted during the day, but at night when you are trying to relax or even go to sleep you are more focused on what your body is feeling and thats why they bug you most then!

They don't truely become itchier - it's simply that you notice them more. During the daytime, you are occupied with something or other, and duing the night, you are trying to get some sleep. The bites would become more promenent, since you would then realise them once more.

I don't think it gets worse you just notice it more because your lying still not doing anything trying to fall asleep and you notice its itchy. During the day you're busy and have other things to occupy your mind.
