Since you asked for rock bands, I am leaving out solo artists, vocal duos, and groups of singers whose members did not play their own instruments. There weren't too many true rock and roll bands in the 1950's. My definition of a rock band would be a group of at least three muscians who play their own instruments. The group can include members who sing or they group can just play instrumentals. Here are some worth listening to:

1950's - Bill Haley & The Comets, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Gene Vicent & The Blue Caps, Link Wray $ His Ray Men, The Champs, Johnny & The Hurricanes, Duane Eddy & The Rockin' Rebels, Wailers

The 60's had loads of great rock bands:(Again, I'm defining a rock band as a group of musicians who sing and play their own instruments)
Amboy Dukes, American Breed, Animals, Association, The Band, Beach Boys, Beatles, Beau Brummels, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Blues McGoos, Booker T. & The MG's, Box Tops, Buckinghams, Buffalo Springfield, Byrds, Canibal & The Headhunters, Capitols, Castaways, Dave Clark Five, Classics IV, Contours, Country Joe & The Fish, Cream, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Count Five, Critters, Cryan' Shames, Joey Dee & The Starliters, Deep Purple, Doors, Easy Beats, Five Americans, Fortunes, Foundations, Freddy & The Dreamers, Bobby Fuller Four, Gentrys, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Grass Roots, Grand Funk Railroad, Grateful Dead. Guess Who, Herman's Hermits, Hollies, Human Beinz, Iron Buttefly, Isley Brothers, Tommy James & The Shondells, Jefferson AIrplane, Kingsmen, Kinks, Knickerbockers, Left Banke, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Lovin' Spoonful, Manfred Mann, McCoys, Meters, Mindbenders, Steve Miller Band, Monkees, Moody Blues, Music Machine, New Colony Six, Ohio Express, Outsiders, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Question Mark & The Mysterians, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Rascals. Rebels, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, Rivieras, Rolling Stones, Ronny & The Daytonas, Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs, Searchers, Seeds, Bob Seger,Sir Douglas Quintet, Shadows of Knight, Sly & The Family Stone, Small Faces/Faces, Soul Survivors, Spencer Davis Group, Standells, Status Quo, Steppenwolf, Strawberry Alarm Alarm Clock, Swinging Medallions, Syndicate of Sound, Ten Years After, Them, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Three Dog Night, Tremoloes, Troggs, Turtles, Vanilla Fudge, Velvet Underground, Ventures, Viscounts, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, We Five, Who, Yardbirds, Zombies,

There's tons of other greats artists from the 50's and 60's other than strictly rock bands. So don't just restrict youself to listening rock bands.
