Transmission is messed up. The only thing you can do now is get it towed to the mechanics.

There is two answers for your question. If your shift lever is stopping on the N and won't move to D then your shift link is stuck or something is in the way. Have somebody go under the car on the driver side and observe any movement while another person will shift the shifter back and forth with the car off and foot on the brake pedal. Where ever he see's any movement then that's where the shift link is. Check to see if anything is blocking it. Might be a rag or anything you think doesnt belong there.
The second answer
If the shifter shifts from P to R to N to D and wont go forward check your transmisson oil and add if needed and if its ok then change the oil. That's really all you could do. If it works your in luck if it doesn't you need a new or rebuilt transmission.
Cost around ****$1,000.00****.
Hope it will work Email me if it works or if you have any other ?'s.

I do not know your vehicle build but....
Typically, shift control is from the shifter to the trans via a cable. Place the shifter in PARK. Locate the shift lever on the trans and where the cable hooks up to the trans. FInd out how to remove the shifter cable - typically you have to squeeze the side and pull back or push forward to remove.
Remove the cable. Look at the position of the shift lever ( on the trans) this is PARK because you placed it into PARK earlier. Now move the lever 4 spots ( P- R- N- D -D2 - D1) to your DRIVE spot . Can you put the trans in Drive.
Move the cable back to PARK and hook up the shift cable.
MOve cable to Drive - any luck?
If you are crazy, you can do this trick with the engine running( tires blocke, e brake on) to see if you can reall drive in Drive ( hence - not a trans issue but rather a shifter/ shift cable issue)
Good luck

It could be the gromets on the linkage. Try shifting in and out of gear 5-6 times with the motor off and the key on. Do not start the car. In any event the best thing that can happen other than devine intervention is that you can get it to the garage yourself. Even if it starts the problem is still there and it may leave in in a problem.

That is a very common problem with explorers, it is caused by a small gummed up ball on a spring in the tail shaft of the transmission. On average it will cost you 2 thousand dollars by the time they find the problem and fix it. It would be cheaper to get the transmission rebuilt or replaced and do the labor yourself. Sorry no good news from me:(

Did someone drop a bic lighter into the shifter mechanism keeping it from moving all the way back?
(center console shifter)
Look under the truck, is there a branch, dead body, or something jammed in the shifter linkage on the tranny?

Don't suspect a transmission problem yet... or at least until you check this out:
Fords used to have a safety feature that prevented them from bring shifted into D, if you had a tail light(s) that burned out. I don't know if this is still a feature on Fords but your owners manual should tell for certain..

Check your transmission fluid for a quick fix, but you should see a trans mechanic.

Wiggle the steering wheel while shifting. ~
If that doesn't do it, check the shift scheme where the shift lever goes down to.
