OK, so when my boss was getting ready to go to Italy and asked me to house/guinea pig sit, I said sure because it was the day before and I knew he was in a bind. He said it was better than hiring a pet sitter. We did not discuss compensation but I figured he had a lot on his mind. I drove out there every day, a round trip drive of about 19 miles. The day before he and his wife were to return, I bought a few groceries for them so they'd have some food to nibble on when they got home instead of running right to the store. When he came back he said they'd appreciated that and would pay me back for them.

I gave him back his keys the other day. This morning he said he was going to the ATM to get money so he could pay me. Yippee.... So he just came in and gave me $29.....for the groceries....and nothing else. So, here's my dilemma, do I go in and ask him if he was planning on paying me for house sitting, or was it my own stupidity to not discuss payment before I accepted the gig?

Suggestions?

you should have made a contract with your boss for compensation . Your time is not free and you might want to remind him of that . and another thing if he ever goes out of town again tell him no you will not sit for him because you did not get paid the last time . good luck next time make a contract that way if they dont pay you can take them to court . good luck .

Since you did not talk about before you took the job then no I would not bring it up now and just be happy you got the other money back. Next time make sure to ask it about it before hand.

You need to ask for payment. I mean does he actually think this is part of your job description. Gas is expensive! If he refuses to pay you I would suggest finding another job. I guess when he needs a housecleaner instead of hiring one they will just call you instead. What a horrible boss!

It may be he thought you were better to get than a pet sitter because he wasn't going to pay you. however your pay for this may come at a later time so i would not ask him for additional money.

Well...If there was never an agreement on payment before then there's not a whole lot to argue with him about..Sorry hon!

He sounds like an ungrateful tight wad, since he,s your boss,
maybe chalk it up to live and learn.
If you still want money I would want $20.00 at least an hour
for every hour.

honestly no you shoud not ask for anything... you did not in the beginning so you should let it go... you got your money back for groceries... I don't think he is a tightwad... I see it as he thinks you did him a favor
