It all depends on what you're looking for. Every guitar has a different sound and a different feel. I personally don't like Fender strats because I don't get enough gain out of a single coil. I also don't generally dig Gibsons, even though their tone is beyond top notch. I'm an ibanez guy personally, but wouldn't go so far as to say the best of all time. It's all personal prefference.

Gibson Les Paul is in my opinion, the best guitar ever. Its an icon of rock music, and was important in creating that rock and roll sound.

Fender makes a very good guitar in the Stratocaster. but Gibson is also an amazing brand. i have a Gibson Les Paul and it is amazing. it has perfect tone and a very good classic design to it. i would have to go with the Gibson Les Paul

I have a "Fender"-Fender is top of the line in selling,and I love mine...I dont know too much about it's history,but i Beleive I would not try any other breand,as the one I have has great acoustics. i choose steel light proffessional strings which has much to do with it at well.Fender is richly made,and has an outstanding reputation for their product(S)/

To me, Gibson SGs are the best, they are versatile, lightweight, and pack a powerful sound. They reek of rock n roll awesome-ness! Fun factoid... SG's were originally made to market to children and women for their light weight and small body.

Most people like Gibsons or Fenders, but I can't stand them.
My fav is the Parker Fly. Smooth like a single malt whiskey.
